You vacuum the floors. You change the litter. You buy the good food. And yet, there's one thing most cat owners almost never think about: the air their cats are breathing every single minute of every single day.
Indoor air quality isn't exactly a glamorous topic. But if you live in California — with its fire seasons, coastal humidity, older housing stock, and urban pollution — it's one that deserves a serious look. Especially if you share your space with a cat.
Small Lungs, Big Problem
Here's the thing about cat respiratory anatomy that most people don't realize: cats have a proportionally smaller lung capacity relative to their body size than humans do. They also have narrower airways. That means when something irritating enters the air — smoke particles, mold spores, chemical off-gassing from household products — their bodies have less room to compensate.
Humans can tolerate a surprisingly wide range of air quality because our respiratory systems are built with redundancy. We cough, we clear mucus, we breathe through our mouths when our noses are overwhelmed. Cats don't have those same backup systems working as efficiently. Their nasal passages are more complex and more sensitive, which is part of why they're such remarkable smell-detectors — but it's also why irritants hit them harder.
Vets have known for decades that cats are disproportionately prone to asthma. Feline asthma affects roughly 1-5% of cats, which doesn't sound huge until you realize that's a significantly higher rate than asthma in humans. Chronic lower airway disease in cats is often triggered or worsened by environmental factors — the exact same ones sitting inside your living room right now.
California's Particular Air Problem
Let's be real: California is not easy on lungs. Wildfire smoke has become a near-annual reality for most of the state, and the particulate matter in that smoke — especially the fine PM2.5 particles — doesn't just hang out outdoors. It seeps inside. It clings to furniture. It recirculates through HVAC systems that were never designed to filter it.
During major fire events, indoor air quality in California homes can actually be worse than outdoor air if ventilation systems are pulling smoke in without filtering it. For a cat who spends 23 hours a day inside, that's not a minor inconvenience — it's a sustained assault on their respiratory system.

Mold spores are a known respiratory irritant for cats, and because cats spend so much time low to the ground — right where mold tends to grow in walls and under flooring — they're often getting a more concentrated dose than their owners standing upright.

Cats metabolize these compounds differently than humans — their livers lack certain enzymes that help break down some toxins, which means chemical exposure that's mildly annoying for you can be genuinely harmful for them.
Essential oil diffusers have surged in popularity, and the news here isn't great for cat owners. Cats are particularly sensitive to many essential oils, including eucalyptus, tea tree, and citrus-derived oils. Diffused particles can be inhaled directly and can also settle on fur, where cats then ingest them during grooming. If you're running a diffuser, it should be in a room your cat can't access — full stop.
Cooking smoke and nonstick cookware are worth mentioning too. Overheated nonstick pans release polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fumes that are genuinely dangerous to birds and can cause respiratory distress in cats. Keep your kitchen ventilated and your cat out of the room when you're cooking at high heat.
New furniture, carpets, and paint off-gas VOCs for weeks after installation. If you've recently renovated or redecorated, that "new" smell isn't just aesthetics — it's chemistry, and your cat is breathing it.
What Respiratory Distress Actually Looks Like
Cats are famously stoic. They hide discomfort until it becomes impossible to hide. That means by the time you notice something is wrong with your cat's breathing, things may have already been difficult for a while.
Watch for:
- Open-mouth breathing at rest (this is almost always a sign something is wrong — cats don't pant like dogs)
- Wheezing or a clicking sound when they exhale
- Increased respiratory rate — a resting cat should breathe about 20-30 times per minute
- Extended neck or elbows-out posture while breathing, which indicates they're working hard to get air
- Chronic sneezing or nasal discharge that isn't connected to an obvious illness
- Lethargy and reduced appetite combined with any of the above
If you're seeing open-mouth breathing or obvious labored breathing, that's an emergency — get to a vet immediately. The subtler signs warrant a same-week appointment, not a wait-and-see approach.
Making Your Home Actually Breathable
The good news: you have more control over this than you might think.
Get an air purifier with a true HEPA filter — and make sure it's sized for the room where your cat spends the most time. During wildfire season, run it continuously. HEPA filters capture particles down to 0.3 microns, which covers most smoke particulates, mold spores, and pet dander. Look for models that also have activated carbon filters, which help capture VOCs.
Check your HVAC filters and upgrade them. Standard HVAC filters don't capture fine particles. MERV-13 filters are a significant upgrade and are recommended by the California Air Resources Board during smoke events. Change them on schedule — a clogged filter is worse than no filter.
Ventilate strategically. On good air quality days, open windows. On smoke days or high-pollution days, keep them closed and rely on filtered indoor air. The AQI (Air Quality Index) is publicly available through AirNow.gov — it takes thirty seconds to check and can make a real difference.
Ditch the synthetic fragrances. Swap candles for beeswax or soy versions with no synthetic fragrance added. Retire the plug-in air fresheners. If you love essential oils, use them only in spaces your cat doesn't access.
Address moisture problems. A dehumidifier in damp spaces can significantly reduce mold growth. If you see visible mold, that's a remediation job — not something to paint over.
Keep floors clean. Particulates settle low, and that's where your cat lives. Regular vacuuming with a HEPA-filtered vacuum makes a measurable difference.
Your Cat Can't Open a Window
This is ultimately about what it means to be responsible for another creature's environment. Your cat didn't choose to live in a city with wildfire smoke seasons. They didn't pick the scented candle you lit last Tuesday. They can't crack a window when the air gets stale.
All they can do is breathe whatever's there — and trust that you're paying attention.
The science is pretty clear that cats are more vulnerable to indoor air quality than we are. The California context makes that vulnerability more acute. And the solutions, thankfully, aren't complicated or expensive. A good air purifier, some product swaps, and a habit of checking the AQI before you open the windows — that's most of it.
